Programs at Howland Stone Store Museum during the first part of the year will look at the years before and shortly after the Civil War through the eyes of Emily Howland and her contemporaries. Emily knew everyone. We will begin by reading and discussing The Agitators by Dorothy Wickenden on January 23rd at 7:00 pm. We had hoped to meet for talk and tea but the ongoing pandemic has send us back to ZOOM. The book is available at local libraries in book, E-book, audiobook, and on kindle and audible as well as through bookstores. In an easy journalistic style it includes excerpts from the letters of Martha Coffin Wright and Frances Seward and relates some of the fine story telling of Harriet Tubman, bringing the personalities of these women and their families to life. The chapters on the Civil War are particularly interesting. Please read what you can but feel free to participate regardless. Some of Emily’s thoughts on the social and political events of the time will be included.
