Fourth session: Sunday, June 5, 2022 7:00 - 8:15 pm

Readings:  CORRECTION - Antietam pp. 1-156, and Part 4 in America’s War, pp 181-199

This reading and discussion group will meet five times, on the last Sunday of each month, from now through June to explore different facets of the Civil War experience, informed by reading the words written or spoken by powerful voices from the past and present.

Session Four, June 5, The Shape of War. We will read and discuss the pivotal battle of Antietam. Noted Civil War historian James McPherson tells the story of the bloodiest day in American history: the events leading up to it, the battle itself, and its aftermath. This critical victory for the Union shored up Lincoln’s political strength and freed him to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

Books are available for loan. Call Marilyn at 315.303.2145 for pick up arrangements.

This discussion group will be in-person at Opendore only with a limit of 20 participants. To reserve a space, please email event@howlandstonestore.org.
