Second session: Sunday March 27, 2022 7:00 - 8:15 pm
Readings: America’s War, Part Two, pp. 15-112
This reading and discussion group will meet five times, on the last Sunday of each month, from now through June to explore different facets of the Civil War experience, informed by reading the words written or spoken by powerful voices from the past and present.
Session Two, March 27, Choosing Sides. Selected readings will allow us to see through the eyes of those who had to decide for themselves where justice, honor, duty, and loyalty lay. Since struggles over slavery underpinned everything associated with America’s Civil War, Frederick Douglass begins the conversation by challenging us with a searing speech from 1852, followed by readings from Abraham Lincoln, Henry David Thoreau, Robert E. Lee, and Mark Twain, among others.
Books are available for loan. Call Marilyn at 315.303.2145 for pick up arrangements.
This discussion group will be in-person at Opendore only with a limit of 20 participants. To reserve a space, please email event@howlandstonestore.org.
