In 2017, historians were startled by the discovery of a photograph of a young, stylishly dressed, Harriet Tubman, part of a one-of-a-kind album owned by Sherwood resident Emily Howland, now on display at the African-American Museum in Washington, D.C. On March 20, HSSM historian Larry Bell will unveil a photo collection that precedes that album, a collection of eleven amazing daguerreotypes from the 1840s and 1850s, depicting Emily’s students, teachers, mentors, and family members. This presentation will foreshadow an upcoming exhibit at Opendore this spring.
