Centennial +1 Celebration

The Howland Store Store Museum invites you to Centennial + 1, a two-day celebration of the passage of the 19th Amendment in August 1920 AND the grand opening of Opendore, complete with exhibitions in its galleries.

Saturday, August 21 will focus on suffrage, voting, voting rights, and the Howlands’ role in attaining that major enhancement of democracy in the United States.

An exciting collaboration between the HSSM and the Morgan Opera House is bringing the New Perspectives Theatre Company up from New York to present Suffragists from the Stage Saturday evening at the Opera House in Aurora.

Sunday, August 22 will focus on the rebuilding of Opendore and what it means for the development of meaningful exhibitions on the historic role of Sherwood and Quaker ideals of equity and inclusion.  Opendore’s very existence also demonstrates how the spirit of persistence and hard work still thrives in Sherwood, New York, where 10,000 plus volunteer hours have created a beautiful building to honor the work of abolition, suffrage, equality in education and more.

Both the Stone Store and Opendore will be open from 1:00 to 5:00 Saturday and Sunday.  Masks will be required for entry in the buildings. The grounds will be ready for exploration, and the buildings will be staffed for scheduled tours.

Spacious tents on the grounds will offer craft tables—accompanied children are eagerly anticipated—as well as voting information and a period-appropriate afternoon tea.

We hope that you will be able to attend one of the afternoon events and the very special play at the Morgan Opera House.  To really get into the spirit, an hour spent at the Friends’ Meeting in Poplar Ridge Sunday morning at 10:00 might acquaint you with something of the spirit that empowered the 19th century Friends to dedicate their lives to improving the lives of others.

This event is free and open to the public; however, due to space constraints and public health concerns, we would like to be able to estimate how many people will be attending. RSVP online here.
Or RSVP by calling 315.303.2145 or emailing event@howlandstonestore.org. Download a pdf of the paper invitation.

p.s.  to honor suffrage on Saturday, wear white!
