Reconstruction After the Civil War

Michael Groth, Professor of History at Wells College, will examine the critical, but largely unknown period of Reconstruction after the Civil War, when Americans were forced to confront the most fundamental questions at the core of the American experiment: the very meanings of democracy and freedom. This time period coincides with Emily Howland’s founding of Arcadia, a community for freed people in Northumberland County, Virginia. Citizenship, voting rights, the struggle for social & economic justice, and national reconciliation are as important today as they were a century and a half ago.

Professor Groth has taught US history for 27 years. His book, “Slavery & Freedom in the Mid-Hudson Valley” (2017) examines slavery, emancipation, & free African-American communities in New York before the Civil War.

This event will be held in person at Opendore and will also be available remotely on Zoom.
