  • Howland Stone Store Museum 2956 State Route 34B Aurora, NY 13026 (map)

On Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 7 PM, Michael Groth, Professor of History at Wells College and author of, “Slavery & Freedom in the Mid-Hudson Valley,” will talk about the emergence and evolution of slavery in North America, including the transformation of what historians have described as “societies with slaves” into “slave societies” between the 17th and 18th centuries. He will examine how the slave system assumed different forms in different places, explore how the Revolution both weakened and strengthened slavery and explain how slavery played a central role in the development of the early republic.

Michael Groth is a Professor of History at Wells College, where he has taught US history since 1994. His principal scholarly interests revolve around race & ethnicity, slavery & antislavery. His book SLAVERY & FREEDOM IN THE MID-HUDSON VALLEY (2017) examines slavery, emancipation, & free African-American communities in NY before the Civil War.
